ART418- reliquary

Reliquary is a container for a saint's bones were kept for religious purpose( to protect relics)
According to wikipedia "Another form of reliquary is called a monstrance. This style of reliquary has a viewing portal by which to view the relic contained inside"(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliquary).
"The earliest reliquaries were essentially boxes, either simply box-shaped or based on an architectural design (e.g. taking the form of a model of a church); these were known as shrines or chasses. Relics of the True Cross became very popular from the 9th century onwards and were housed in magnificent gold and silver cross-shaped reliquaries, decorated with enamels and precious stones. From about the end of the 10th century, reliquaries in the shape of the relics they housed also became popular; hence, for instance, Pope Alexander I's skull was housed in a head-shaped reliquary. Similarly, the bones of saints were often housed in reliquaries that recalled the shape of the original body part, such as an arm or a foot"(also from wikipedia).

Reliquary are used in different countries with a variety of designs and for a different purposes.

"Reliquaries were often designed in shapes that reflected the nature of their contents, such as hands, shoes, buildings, and heads. They were richly decorated with gold, silver, enamel, and jewels"(http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/reliquary.aspx).

  • google barbed wire and get some images
  • order diamond shaped gemstone
  • make an acutal piece with sheet wax (for the half of the diamond shape) and make another half with wax wire
  • put sheet wax and wax wire together
  • make necklace (string piece) with wax wire
  • put sprue on diamond shape/ put sprued on necklace(string piece)
  • measure the weight of each pieces
  • measure the metal weight
  • attach diamond shape onto the button and use debubblizer
  • attach string piece onto the button (two pieces go in one flask)and use debubblizer
  • invest four big flask

Blood Diamond Artiststatement

I did not know what Blood Diamond was until Blood Diamond project was given. After watching and researching about Blood Diamond, I was shocked by the fact how diamond was mined in Sierra Leone. While I was watching a document on blood diamond, I felt their mental and physical pain, hatred, and anger. I decided to design my piece as a jewelry that people would not want to wear. Unwearable. Diamond is a jewelry that people want because it's beautiful however, most people don't know where diamonds come from and how they are mined. Therefore I wanted to show the real side of the diamond by using barbed wire like shape for the necklace and half of a diamond shaped with barbed wire. I chose barbed wire shape because when we think about it, it hurt people. When people touch or grab barbed wire, they bleed and leaves scar. People in Sierra Leone were killed if they couldn't find diamond. In my designed piece, I wanted to express diamond's harmful side and makes people not want to wear diamond anymore. Before people find out where diamonds come from, people should not wear diamonds.

I thought of using natural resin or clay
resin and clay are used by many people for casting

People nowdays think about how environmentally safe and/or sustainable designs. I think making design based on safety of environment is very important. Pollution is the biggest problem. Forest is about to be gone due to lack of trees(people cut down the trees). We need to save our earth by designing things sustainable and environmetally safe.
